Dear Reader,
It can be difficult for a teacher when she has students that are struggling in writing. This means that she has to change the way she approaches writing differently with them. There are numerous reasons why students may be struggling with writing; lack of motivation, learning disability, lack of confidence, etc. It can be hard for the teacher to learn to help those students. In a perfect classroom there would not be students who struggle with writing but unfortunately it is not like that.
When I first started this assignment, I wanted to work on how to help students that receive special education services. As I did my observations, I noticed that many students who received special education services had trouble with writing. I saw as my mentor teacher try different strategies to help those students. After I realize that students with learning disabilities fall under the struggling writers. I knew that I had little knowledge on how to help students who have a hard time writing.
After doing my research, I found out many strategies that I can use to help struggling writers. As teachers, we need to work together with the student to find out which strategies work best for them. I also found a useful resource on how to conference with struggling writers. one of the many strategies is having students write in a writers notebook. Many of the strategies found can be very useful for struggling writers but also for the rest of the students.
After doing the research I feel like am capable of helping struggling writers in my class. I hope that the different pieces of writing and resources help you in finding methods to help struggling writers in your class.
Sincerely,
Mariel Javier
